Australia Demographics

Possible Future Major Demographic Challenges

Currently 18.6% of the population of Australia is 0-14 years of age. 0-14 years is a dependent age group. This may result in an increasing percentage of people that fall into this age range as the population grows by about 1.2% each year, which is a problem because they are dependent on others and not themselves.
The sex ratio for seniors 65 years and older is 0.84 male per every female. This shows that females significantly outnumber the males in Australia, which is evident in the 2050 population pyramid. As the population grows, the females will outnumber the males more and more every year, which will result in an unbalanced gender scale, similar to the problem in China of having too much males and not enough females for every male to be able to have a family of his own.
Another problem is that the population in 2050 will be 1.5 times the population of 2010. This is a huge difference, and this is not necessarily good for the country because after 2050, the population will be even higher because there will be exponential growth in the population. The growth rate is too high.
